I’ve written about Mr Pitt before. There is no human being alive whom I would rather resemble physically. Somewhere between the full lips and soulful blue eyes there’s an inner confidence that suggests Michael Pitt knows exactly who Michael Pitt needs to be, and he is busy being it like mad. Steve Buscemi’s Nucky Thompson may steal the limelight with his flashy pin-collars and decadently colourful gangsterwear, but it’s Pitt as Jimmy Darmody in tonal blue-on-blue that really draws the fashion eye. The deep indigo shirt and slim fitting checked suit in a tonal shade are the perfect balance for Michael’s fair colouring. And that severe undercut beneath a full sweep of hair reveal that he is still king of the floppy fringe.
During this first season of Boardwalk, Pitt’s Jimmy Darmody grows before our eyes from a fragile, damaged street urchin in tweed bakerboy cap to a man whose steely will should never underestimated. Alongside this transformation is a subtle shift in sartorial confidence, and whilst his comrades exude gangsterish flash, Pitt in deep blues suggests a darker, more downtown nonchalance. Already mesmerised, this is a journey I’m looking forward to continuing.
